It uses a telescoping truss that pulls the lower deck into the upper deck. To let large freight ships pass, the bottom train deck opens without interfering with car, bike and truck traffic on the upper deck. It is the only telescoping vertical-lift bridge still operating in the country today. The first Steel Bridge was built in 1888 and was replaced in 1912 by a vertical-lift span.
